Sara suddenly spotted a large kiddie pool, fully inflated and prominently displayed near the front entrance. She suggested that this would make a great summer addition to the terrace of our new apartment. “But we’ve already got a kiddie pool,” I protested (like any dutiful father). “Yes, but not a pool like this!” she responded. I looked at it again. True enough, this was no ordinary baby pool or kiddie pool or wading pool. The label on the box read: Family Swim Center. And the name suited it. It was bigger than any other inflatable pool in the store (and probably in all of Turkey). It was a monster-sized 10 ft. x 6 ft. x 2 ft. of heavy-duty vinyl that promised hours and hours of family fun and enjoyment. The box depicted a family of 5 (father, mother, and 3 children) happily submerged in it. It honestly looked like I could float a kayak in it. So (like any dutiful father) I yielded over my practical, analytical side and gave in to a spontaneous purchase of about US $30. After all, this was summer break, and we wanted to have some quality family time.

Teacher Exploration - Heather Hiltsley, Bandung, Indonesia

OogalaBoogala!! Dennis Lugar

Dennis & Susan Lugar have been around NICS for most of its existence, and their time of working with the Hales dates back to 1981, when both of them served as single missionaries. This couple is testimony to the possibility of finding your life mate on the mission field! Their three sons—Jonathan, Caleb and Jesse were all born in Korea. The Lugars left Korea for a few years as Dennis finished up his masters degree, after which he spent a couple of years teaching in Hong Kong at International Christian School. Upon his return to the States, Dennis served as a board member of NICS, while teaching at Lexington Baptist College in Kentucky. He came to join the NICS home office staff as senior vice-president in June 1999.

Teacher exploration - Garrett Smith, Amazon Valley Academy - Belem, Brazil

Bom Dia! Good Day! My target area and focus for ministry in Belem is the hearts of my students. With the gospel of Christ interwoven into the school’s curriculum, subjects like history and science are truly brought to life. The classroom contains much zeal for learning and an excitement about the friendship between everyone. It is a unique and exciting atmosphere. Alongside my 3 Junior High classes, I teach two subjects to the high school. You can be praying for them as their self-image and peer pressure has limited our conversation about the Lord. They put on a good face, saying that they are too cool to be spiritual. I believe though that God is penetrating them with His truth. It is difficult for me to tolerate because just trying to be cool could be the most effective way for a student to waste their time and energy.
