February 17, 1995 was a day that would change a life. That date marks the beginning of a grand adventure in serving God, the day Kathy McKinney’s application was submitted to NICS.
Kathy is the middle of three daughters born to Milton McKinney and the late Joyce McKinney. Milton, known to most as Mac, is a retired preacher, spending most of his career serving at small country churches. While they moved around quite a bit during their childhood, Kathy’s Dad and sisters along with her ten nieces and nephews all live in beautiful central Pennsylvania.
Kathy didn’t have grand ambitions for herself; however an encounter with God planted a passion for education in her heart. That passion was fueled through her studies in Biblical Studies and Elementary Education at Washington Bible College. During that time God also grew a passion for missions in her heart.
A combined passion for education and missions is what led Kathy to NICS and what still motivates her today. In 1995 Kathy joined the staff of Bandung Alliance Intercultural School in Bandung, Indonesia. Since then she has served at our former school in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at ICS in Lima, Peru, and at our project in Batam, Indonesia. She has been a teacher, a principal, and a school director.
When, due to government regulations and visa issues, we had to close the learning center in Batam, Kathy was faced with unforeseen change. Kathy spent months seeking God and praying over every opportunity presented to her and with each one she heard God telling her not go back overseas but rather prepare for a season in the states. This was a difficult message to hear. Kathy loves working with the TCKS at our schools, discipling students, equipping teachers, and talking about Jesus. She wanted to jump back in, but God said wait. So she waited.
Earlier this year an opportunity was presented to Kathy that at first glance did not seem like a logical choice, it wasn’t teaching, or administration, or any of the roles she naturally would pursue, but she sought the Lord and this time He said ,”yes.” In April, Kathy joined the home office as the Recruiting and Marketing Director. Kathy will be leading the team of recruiters who travel around the US sharing the mission, vision, and opportunities for service with NICS.
Kathy started at an equipper of students, then became an equipper of teachers, now she is equipping our schools. Through all these roles and locations she has experienced the power and truth of God’s Equipping of those He calls to serve. He is Faithful!
